Jerry O’Connell Shares His Mystique Collection That Embarrasses His Wife

Star Trek: Lower Decks star Jerry O’Connell reveals a delightful hobby he indulges in at Comic Con events: hunting for collectibles featuring his wife, Rebecca Romijn, from her days portraying Mystique in the X-Men franchise. Romijn, who played Mystique in the first three X-Men films from 2000 to 2006, has been married to O’Connell since 2007. The couple has also collaborated professionally, lending their voices to Superman and Lois Lane in the animated movies The Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen, and co-starring in the indie slasher comedy Satanic Panic and the animated series Lower Decks among other projects.

Despite Romijn’s slight embarrassment over her husband’s collection of plastic figurines representing her, it doesn’t deter O’Connell’s excitement. Publicly affectionate, the couple seems quite comfortable with Romijn’s villainous on-screen legacy. O’Connell even made a notable appearance at a convention, dressing up as her shape-shifting mutant character, Mystique.

“My wife was Mystique in X-Men, and whenever I come to a con, I look for obscure, unique Mystique figures and figurines. We collect them and I put them up,” O’Connell shared with ComicBook. “I put it up, it’s mine, and my wife is a little embarrassed by it, but it’s my Mystique shelf.”

Romijn, in an interview last year, touched on her challenging experiences with X-Men: The Last Stand filmmaker Brett Ratner, who has faced allegations of abuse and been largely sidelined in Hollywood. However, her broader experience with the X-Men franchise remained positive, as she expressed in 2014 her willingness to reprise the role of Mystique.

According to Paramount+’s official synopsis, in Season 5 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the U.S.S. Cerritos crew is assigned to close “space potholes”, subspace rifts wreaking havoc in the Alpha Quadrant. Although the task might seem straightforward for Junior Officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford, they also have to handle an Orion war, contentious Klingons, diplomatic disasters, murder mysteries, and the most daunting challenge – their career goals. This season on Paramount+ is a tribute to this underdog crew, who find themselves precariously close to moving out of the lower decks and into novel Starfleet roles.

Star Trek: Lower Decks narrates the adventures of the support crew on one of Starfleet’s less significant ships, the U.S.S. Cerritos. It features a talented voice cast including Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, and Eugene Cordero as the junior officers, with Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore, and Gillian Vigman as the Cerritos bridge crew.

Production of Star Trek: Lower Decks involves CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment. The show’s executive producers are Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth, with Titmouse being the animation studio behind the series.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is available for streaming exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Latin America. The fifth season of Star Trek: Lower Decks will premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, October 24th, starting with the debut of the first two episodes of the final season.
