Jessica Alba has revealed her eldest daughter Honor, 16, is taking design inspiration from Y2K millennials, covering her bedroom walls in posters, polaroids, and artwork.

Jessica, the host of Roku Channel’s Honest Renovations, shared that while she tries to maintain boundaries at home, her three children have customized their own bedrooms to reflect their personalities.

“My kids are now at the age, especially the older ones, where they do have a say in how their room looks,” said Jessica. “It’s never gonna be as tidy as I want it to be, but I have to let that go! My oldest, especially, loves stuff all over the walls.”

Recently, they replaced the carpet in their rooms, took out all the furniture, and somehow, her daughter’s room still looked messy. “How is this even possible? How does her room look cluttered and messy?” Jessica wondered.

She realized it was all the wall decorations—posters, her own artwork, fake vines, twinkle lights, and lights that go all around the room. “What is not on her wall?”

For Jessica, allowing their personalities to shine is important. “That, to me, is more important, just letting them feel like they can fully express themselves,” she added.

Jessica is mom to Honor, 16, 13-year-old Haven, and 6-year-old son Hayes, whom she shares with husband Cash Warren. While she believes shared family spaces should have some restrictions, she joked that her son Hayes’s monster trucks and Hot Wheels are always scattered about. “We have the baskets for him to put it away, and they’re just always everywhere!”

The 43-year-old businesswoman co-hosts Honest Renovations with good friend Lizzy Mathis, also a mom-of-three. The series involves surprising parents with home renovations that transform their living spaces from cluttered and chaotic to functional and fabulous. Jessica and Lizzy also share their own experiences on raising children and building a family-friendly home.

In one touching season two episode, they work on a multi-generational home, leading Jessica and Lizzy to share emotional stories about growing up with extended family.

Though their children are friends and met on the school playground, Jessica and Lizzy see their time on Honest Renovations as a getaway from family life. “This is really our way to be away from our family!” Lizzy laughed.

“This is where we get to hang out! We are good about incorporating our families into our career life, which is beautiful and wonderful. It’s always amazing for our kids to see us in this light, and they love it.” But when it comes to the show, their focus is on the families they help.

“For this show, it is important for us to focus on the families when we’re there. As fun as it is to have our families around, our kids still want our attention and things from us. So when we are on set, we are fully focused on that,” she explained.

They have learned from season one and ensured for season two that they are “more prepared so that we can get the most out of the time we have with the families and on the renovation.”

“The other thing we learned was really being able to show a little bit more diversity in the types of families that we feature,” added Jessica. “We’ve shown everything from a single mom to a multigenerational family, to a family that has a child with different needs, to a family that’s going through an illness.”

Being able to showcase different pivotal moments in people’s lives and providing them with renovations that meet their needs was significant for Jessica and Lizzy.
