Jessica Simpson has addressed claims suggesting she has resumed drinking alcohol, emphatically stating that her decision to stop drinking in October 2017 was the best choice for herself and her family.

The mother of three, who went sober seven years ago and acknowledged in 2021 that she had found “self-respect,” recently faced speculation on Instagram. A follower, concerned about her sobriety, commented on a post celebrating her son Ace’s 11th birthday, suggesting Jessica was drinking again.

“STOP DRINKING,” the follower wrote. Jessica responded publicly with a heartfelt comment.

“I haven’t wanted or touched alcohol since October 2017 and it has been the best decision I’ve made for myself and for my family. Thank you for your concern, but you have me very misunderstood. Sending love your way,” she replied, receiving support from other followers.

In her memoir Open Book, released in 2020, Jessica spoke candidly about her battle with alcohol addiction. She revealed she had been “killing” herself with alcohol and pills. In 2021, she shared a poignant moment of realization, posting a picture of herself looking vastly different from her usual self, make-up free in a pink tracksuit, in a dimly-lit room.

“Personally, to do this I needed to stop drinking alcohol because it kept my mind and heart circling in the same direction and quite honestly I was exhausted. I wanted to feel the pain so I could carry it like a badge of honor,” she explained, adding that she wanted to live as a “leader” and “break cycles to advance forward” without looking back with regret.

Jessica acknowledged that real progress in her life required her to accept failure, pain, brokenness, and self-sabotage. She admitted that the root issue wasn’t the drinking itself, but rather her lack of self-love and respect for her own power. Today, she embraces her personal power and faces her fears with “soulful courage.”

“I have accepted the parts of my life that are just sad. I own my personal power with soulful courage. I am wildly honest and comfortably open. I am free,” Jessica affirmed.

The singer also reflected on how time had passed and noted that there is still considerable stigma around the term “alcoholism” and the label “alcoholic.”

Jessica’s journey has been supported by her husband Eric, her three children Maxwell, Ace, and Birdie-Mae, and her sister Ashlee.
