Joanna Gaines Shares BTS Video—I’m Definitely Stealing This 12-Second Trick

Joanna Gaines’s social media is a treasure trove of brilliant home hacks and decor tips, so you can understand why I often check out her Instagram page when I need some inspiration. So far, I’ve learned that hanging shelves are a smart way to save space and that accent wallpapers can totally transform any room. But now, I’m intrigued by a new, super-easy, free, and quick decor trick she recently shared on Instagram.

This weekend, the interior designer and TV personality shared new footage to promote her new fall collection and wrote, “I got to dress up a favorite Fixer Upper of mine with our #HearthandHandwithMagnolia fall collection—and it all looks so cozy!”

In the video, Gaines decorates the home with a few of her pieces, from artificial flowers to throw pillows. But the part that caught my eye? When she stacked a framed painting in front of a larger mirror.

In the clip, Gaines carefully positions the painting in the left bottom corner of the mirror, which adds a bit more color and dimension, making the mirror look more decorative and the space more surprising and nuanced. But I’m not the only one who took notice of this smart trick. Take it from PureWow Editor-in-Chief Jillian Quint, who actually tried this hack in her home.

Here, she uses an arched, gold-framed mirror and layers a small black-and-white painting in the bottom left corner. The reflection of the colorful wallpaper and hanging photos also creates a stunning visual effect.

She says, “I love this trick to give a room depth and intrigue, and as an alternative to a gallery wall. I’ve also found it helps if you want a mirror to be seen more as a work of art, and less as a thing to look at yourself in.” (Yep, I’m sold.)

Looks like I’ve got some minor redecorating to do tonight.
