Joe Jonas is embarking on a new journey, stepping into his solo music career with the announcement of his upcoming single, “Work It Out,” which is set to release on July 19. The 34-year-old singer, known for his roles in groups like the Jonas Brothers and DNCE, is opening up about his forthcoming solo album slated for later this year.
During his appearance on the Therapuss with Jake Shane podcast, Joe revealed that he sought his brothers’ blessings before venturing into solo work. “I asked my brothers’ blessings. I was like, ‘Hey, I’m gonna go work on something on my own, and I don’t feel like it’s DNCE. And I need to go just express some stuff for myself,'” Joe shared. “And they’re like, ‘Go for it.’ Nick booked a movie. Kevin was going to do another season of Claim to Fame … and so I had the window of time.”
The former Disney Channel star mentioned that he created the album within just two weeks, describing it as “the most personal music I’ve ever put out.” Joe explained that his upcoming single “Work It Out” addresses the necessity of self-reliance and pushing oneself out of a rut. “The idea is sometimes you realize you have to just shake yourself out of something and you’re the only person going to fix it for yourself. No one’s going to save you,” he said.
Fans can expect a diverse range of songs on the album. Joe hinted, “This music, it’s all over the place. There’s some real beautiful ballads, there’s some songs about being a dad, there’s songs about love, there’s songs about being better to yourself, kind of everything.”
This will be Joe’s first solo effort since his 2011 album Fastlife . He reunited with the Jonas Brothers in 2019, and their group released its sixth studio album, The Album in 2023.
This year has been tumultuous for Joe on a personal front. He and his ex, Sophie Turner, announced their plans to divorce in September 2023 after four years of marriage. They share two daughters, Willa, 4, and Delphine, 2.
In October 2023, the ex-couple reached a temporary custody agreement following Sophie’s lawsuit against Joe for “wrongful retention” of their daughters. By January 2024, she had dismissed the lawsuit. However, their divorce hasn’t been finalized yet, with Joe initially filing for divorce in September citing that “the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken.”
Sophie has since moved on with boyfriend Peregrine Pearson, while Joe had a brief romance with Stormi Bree.
In a May cover story for British Vogue, the Game of Thrones star opened up about her painful split from Joe. Amid the divorce proceedings, Sophie noted, “there were some days that I didn’t know if I was going to make it.” She recounted calling her lawyer, feeling that she couldn’t continue. “After two weeks of me being in a rut, she reminded me that it was my children I was fighting for,” Sophie said of her lawyer. “Once anyone says to me, ‘Do it for your kids,’ I’m doing it. I wouldn’t do it for myself, but I’ll find the strength for them.”
