John Cena Remains Coy About Hollywood Career Post-WWE Retirement

WWE legend John Cena has recently announced his retirement from professional wrestling, but his career in Hollywood will continue to flourish.

In a recent interview with Discussing Film about his new movie, Jackpot, Cena shed some light on his future plans, addressing his winding WWE career as well.

“I don’t necessarily pursue stuff—I just try to be aware of the opportunities that could come my way,” Cena stated. “I don’t know what opportunities are out there, but I always keep an open mind. And I take all calls because that’s what has given me such a lengthy career in WWE—just being open-minded and coachable and wanting to work with anyone.”

“I just think it’s time to close that chapter, as I’ll be 48 next year. I just want to do a nice thank-you gesture to our audiences around the world, and we’ll see what happens after that,” he added.

After over two decades in the WWE, John Cena officially announced his retirement tour at the 2024 Money in the Bank PLE. Key signature events such as the Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, and WrestleMania in 2025 are set to be his final appearances.

Fortunately for WWE fans, Cena will perform on a somewhat full-time basis for the first time since around 2017. This will provide fans worldwide the chance to see him in action, as he mentioned in the interview.

Throughout his WWE career, Cena has achieved nearly everything possible. He is tied with Ric Flair for the most WWE world championship reigns at 16 and might seek to break the tie during his farewell tour.

Additionally, Cena has won the United States Championship five times and the Tag Team Championship four times with various partners including The Miz, David Otunga, Batista, and Shawn Michaels.

Among his other notable accomplishments are two Royal Rumble victories (2008, 2013) and winning the Money in the Bank briefcase in 2012. The only championship that has eluded him is the Intercontinental Championship, currently held by Bron Breakker after defeating Sami Zayn at SummerSlam.

Early in his career, Cena took roles in WWE-produced movies such as The Marine, 12 Rounds, Legendary, and The Reunion. His growth in the WWE mirrored his expansion into Hollywood.

He had small roles in comedies like Trainwreck, Sisters, and Daddy’s Home in 2015. A few years later, he landed breakout roles in Blockers and Bumblebee, showcasing his range in both comedic and serious roles.

Following parts in Playing with Fire and Dolittle, Cena secured his biggest role to date in F9, playing the antagonist Jakob Toretto. He also appeared in The Suicide Squad and Vacation Friends that same year.

The year 2023 marked the pinnacle of Cena’s acting career, with roles in six major projects including Fast X, Barbie, Hidden Strikes, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Vacation Friends 2, and Freelance.

He kicked off 2024 with a role in Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle, reuniting with Barbie co-star Dua Lipa. Cena then starred in Ricky Stanicky and will appear in Jackpot alongside Awkwafina and Simu Liu. Directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids), Jackpot follows a woman played by Awkwafina who wins the lottery and must survive 24 hours during which she can be hunted for her winnings. Cena plays her bodyguard, teaming up with her to ensure her safety.
