The late John Lennon’s son, Sean Ono, recently discussed in an interview with The Sunday Times his efforts to keep his father’s memory alive through music. This conversation came as Sean promoted the re-release of John Lennon’s 1973 solo album, Mind Games. At 48, Sean is committed to preserving John’s legacy. He is motivated by a concern that society tends to forget important cultural artifacts too quickly, and he believes his father’s music is too significant to be lost to time.

It’s been 44 years since the iconic Beatles member was tragically killed by Mark David Chapman near his New York City apartment. For Sean, who was just five years old at the time, the loss has had a profound impact on his life ever since.

Sean has managed to reconnect with his father through music. He describes John’s lyrics as a kind of diary, offering insights into his personal life and thoughts during the creation of each song. For example, Mind Games was written during a turbulent period in John’s life. He had separated from Sean’s mother, Yoko Ono, and began a relationship with their assistant, May Pang. Surprisingly, Yoko was aware of and even encouraged the affair, attempting to maintain some control over the situation post-breakup.

Sharing the same birthday as his father, Sean is often seen as a reincarnation of John. Mirroring his father’s musical talent, Sean has released three solo albums and performs with his psychedelic rock band, The Claypool Lennon Delirium. In addition to his solo work, he has collaborated with Yoko Ono on several projects and produced music for artists like Lana Del Rey.

Sean isn’t the only musical talent in the Lennon family. He shares a strong bond with his older step-brother, Julian Charles Lennon, John’s son from his first wife, Cynthia. Julian, an accomplished musician himself, has released seven studio albums and is also passionate about photography, filmmaking, and writing. He has even authored a children’s book titled Touch the Earth. Sean and Julian maintain a close relationship, speaking almost daily and deeply cherishing their connection.

While they each have their own artistic pursuits, the brothers find common ground in their shared heritage and mutual respect for their father’s tremendous impact on the world of music. Together, they strive to carry forward John Lennon’s cultural legacy, ensuring that his visionary contributions to music and art continue to inspire future generations.
