John Stamos credits therapist for his sobriety: ‘I probably wouldn’t be here’

John Stamos credits his therapist with saving his life and career.

The actor and singer, whose six-year-old son Billy recently joined him on stage during a Beach Boys concert, opened up about his therapeutic journey at the season two premiere of Hulu’s “Unprisoned” in New York City on July 16.

“I probably wouldn’t be here [without him],” Stamos said to Page Six.

Stamos, 60, revealed that he has been in therapy with the acclaimed psychiatrist Phil Stutz, who was featured in the Jonah Hill documentary “Stutz,” for about two decades.

“When I went to Stutz one of the first times, he said, ‘You know if you weren’t so f–ing stupid you’d realize how good you have it,’ and I was like, ‘You’re right,'” Stamos explained.

The actor also persuaded his late “Full House” co-star Bob Saget to give therapy a try.

“He drove me crazy [when we first met] and I said, ‘You gotta go into therapy if you want to be friends with me,’ so he went to Stutz and Stutz helped him too.”

Saget passed away in January 2022 due to a head injury in Orlando, Florida.

Stamos mentioned that his therapist “was big into helping me get sober” after his 2015 arrest for driving under the influence. He entered a treatment facility one month post-arrest, as noted in his memoir “If You Would Have Told Me.”

Stamos, now 60, stars as Murphy, a new character in “Unprisoned.”

The comedy stars Kerry Washington as a relationship counselor whose father, played by Delroy Lindo, gets out of jail and moves in with her and her teenage son.

The show boasts an impressive 93-percent rating from critics and a 94-percent rating from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

The actor shared his personal experience as a patient of the straight-talking therapist for his new role. “I give free therapy to people,” he joked on Good Morning America.

“I’m fascinated by therapy. It’s what makes people move and go and what they do and what they don’t do,” said Stamos.

“Unprisoned” season two is currently streaming on Hulu.
