Johnny Depp’s ‘Modi – Three Days On The Wing Of Madness’ Debuts at San Sebastián

Johnny Depp will bring his latest directorial endeavor, Modi – Three Days On The Wing Of Madness, starring Stephen Graham and Al Pacino, to this year’s San Sebastián Film Festival, where it will screen out of competition.

Described as a "seventy-two-hour whirlwind in the life of bohemian artist Amedeo Modigliani," the film portrays the chaotic events in the streets of war-torn Paris in 1916.

The synopsis notes that, on the run from the police, Modigliani’s desire to end his career and depart the city is met with resistance from fellow artists Maurice Utrillo, Chaim Soutine, and Modigliani’s muse, Beatrice Hastings. Seeking guidance from his art dealer and friend, Leopold Zborowski, Modigliani endures a night of hallucinations. The chaos peaks when he encounters American collector Maurice Gangnat, who holds the power to alter his life dramatically.

This screening marks Depp’s return to San Sebastián after he received the festival’s Donostia Award for lifetime achievement in 2021.

San Sebastián also announced that Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate of the Festival de Cannes and Director of the Lumière Institute, will return to screen Lumière! The Adventure Continues. This documentary is a sequel to Lumière! The Adventure Begins (2016).

According to its synopsis, the sequel reveals another hundred Lumière films, all immaculately restored. It aims to delve deeper into the history of cinema’s invention and establishment worldwide. Following the success and widespread release of its predecessor, this new feature-length film seeks to show that the roots of cinema’s greatest and most beautiful works lie in its origins, both profoundly French and truly international.

The San Sebastián Film Festival will run from September 20 to 28 this year.
