Jon Stewart Reflects on America’s ‘Terrible Week’ After Trump Attack Plot

Jon Stewart has reflected on what he described as "a terrible f***ing week" for the United States following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The comedian, now 61, had to cancel plans to broadcast The Daily Show from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where the Republican National Convention is currently taking place. Instead, Stewart greeted viewers from the show’s usual studio in New York City.

During Tuesday night’s episode, Stewart addressed the shooting that occurred at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania over the weekend. Trump was largely unharmed, with a bullet only grazing his ear. However, the attack resulted in one spectator’s death and two others being rushed to the hospital. Thankfully, their conditions have since stabilized.

"We dodged a catastrophe, but it was still a tragedy," Stewart said somberly. He paid tribute to former fire chief Corey Comperatore, who died while protecting his family during the attack.

In his signature style, Stewart also addressed the numerous conspiracy theories that quickly emerged online following the incident. With a dose of irony, he remarked that "the internet is a great source of information" when disaster strikes. "For instance, within minutes, I found out that this [attack] is staged, and then I found out that it was actually an inside job, and then I found out it was Joe Biden who ordered it," he quipped.

Stewart, who originally hosted The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015, returned to cover the 2024 presidential race. He couldn’t resist poking fun at his own decision to come back. "Hey Jon, come back to The Daily Show just for the election, it’ll be fun," he joked. "You can do one day a week, it’ll be a laugh. What could go wrong?"

He also provided some context about the last-minute change of venue. "Because of the attempt on the former president’s life, the venue in which we planned to do the show, which was originally located in the soft perimeter, was shifted, understandably so, to the hard perimeter," Stewart explained.

Stewart elaborated on the logistical challenges: "You really don’t want to be in the hard perimeter. It was locked down. They build cages around the theatre, and because of that, we felt that we could not put on the theatre shows effectively without people."

A statement posted on The Daily Show’s Twitter/X account had earlier cited "logistical issues and the evolving situation in Milwaukee" as the reasons for the cancellation of the planned broadcasts from Milwaukee.

Stewart’s return to The Daily Show, even if temporary, has garnered significant attention, especially given the current volatile political climate. His unique blend of sharp wit and thoughtful commentary continues to resonate with audiences, serving as a lens through which they can better understand and process the current state of affairs.

Despite the initially planned festive atmosphere around broadcasting from Milwaukee during the Republican National Convention, the tragic events in Pennsylvania cast a long shadow over the episode. The change in plans also served as a reminder of the unpredictable and often precarious nature of the current political landscape.

Stewart’s handling of the current events fused humor with a measure of solemn respect for those affected, reminding everyone of the significant impact such actions can have on individuals and communities. The death of Corey Comperatore, in particular, struck a chord, emphasizing the human cost of political violence.

The streaming of conspiracy theories online, which Stewart humorously touched upon, also highlighted the often chaotic information landscape in our digital age. It’s a landscape where truth and misinformation can often become intertwined, creating confusion and fear among the public.

As Stewart and his team navigated the logistical and emotional hurdles of this tumultuous week, their adaptability and dedication to delivering timely commentary were clear. The situation underscored the vital role that shows like The Daily Show play in interpreting and critiquing the never-ending cycle of news, politics, and public spectacle.
