Jonah Lomu Rugby Legend Immortalized in ‘Lomu’ Documentary (EXCLUSIVE)

Jonah Lomu, the youngest rugby union player ever to represent New Zealand, is set to be honored in a feature documentary titled “Lomu.” Known for his massive size and extraordinary agility, Lomu became an iconic figure in the sport, leaving behind a lasting legacy.

The documentary is being co-directed by Gavin FitzGerald, who has worked on “Conor McGregor: Notorious” and “Liam Gallagher: As It Was,” along with Tongan-New Zealander Vea Mafile’o, recognized for her contributions to “Lea Tupu’anga/Mother Tongue” and “For My Father’s Kingdom.” Mafile’o is personally connected to Lomu through familial roots in Tonga’s Ha’apai islands.

“Lomu” aims to explore the 6ft 5 inch (1.95m) player’s life, capturing his rise from humble beginnings to his remarkable achievements on the rugby field. The film will also delve into his personal struggles, including his battle with health issues. Jonah Lomu passed away in 2015 at the age of 40.

Lomu’s family, including his mother, Hepi Lomu, have participated in the project. Hepi expressed their approval of the film, stating, “As a family, we are happy to work with this team who are committed to celebrating our son.”

Sean FitzPatrick, a former captain of New Zealand’s All Blacks rugby team, also provides insights in the documentary. He emphasized Jonah’s lasting influence on rugby, stating, “Jonah, quite simply, changed the game of rugby forever. His influence can still be felt today, and that is why it is so important to celebrate his legacy.”

Currently in production, the film is a joint effort by U.K.-based Sylver Entertainment and New Zealand’s Tahi Productions. The project has secured funding from the New Zealand Film Commission and the BFI’s U.K. Global Screen Fund Co-Production Strand.

Scheduled for a theatrical release in 2025, Madman Entertainment will distribute the film in Australia and New Zealand. Dogwoof, a U.K.-based documentary sales specialist, will handle international sales and serve as executive producer.

The production team boasts prominent figures such as Victoria Barrell, the producer of “Bobby Robson: More Than a Manager,” and sports presenter Simon Lazenby, both from Sylver. Additionally, IFTA Award-winning editor Iseult Howlett has been contracted as the film’s editor.
