Jonathan Owens Cheers on Simone Biles from Home During Olympic Qualifiers

Jonathan Owens will be in Paris soon to support Simone Biles during her Olympic run, but for now, he’s cheering her on proudly from home.

The NFL player, 29, was tuned into his television to watch Biles compete in the gymnastics qualification round on Sunday, July 28 at Bercy Arena in Paris. Though Owens, a safety for the Chicago Bears, negotiated time off from the team’s required training camp to watch the four-time Olympic gold medalist compete at the 2024 Games, he isn’t able to leave until July 29.

Instead, he watched from Chicago as Biles, 27, pushed through a calf issue to dominate on the vault, beam, bars and floor. She currently sits atop the all-around standings with one more round of qualifications to be completed.

Owens posted several videos on his Instagram Stories as he watched Biles, starting with one where he wrote, “We locked in 💙” as the introduction played.

Then, as the superstar gymnast looked unbeatable on the balance beam, Owens posted a video and wrote, “Flawless 🔥💙.”

Biles’ morning took a turn as she warmed up for the floor exercise, when she appeared to tweak her calf, and briefly left the competition floor with Team USA gymnastics’ doctor. She returned with a taped-up ankle, but showed no signs of pain through her floor routine before moving on to the vault.

“Let’s gooooooo!!!!!” Owens wrote alongside a video of her strong vault, and of Snoop Dogg showing off a Simone t-shirt. He then added, “No words 🙏🏾.”

His final story included a screenshot of Biles after her uneven bars exercise, which secured her first-place spot, and the words, “Let’s go baby ❤️🤍💙.”

Owens, who played last season for the Green Bay Packers, explained last week that he worked with the Bears to get time off to see Biles compete when he signed his new contract.

“Obviously the Olympics were coming up and you know who my wife is,” he said after practice on July 25. “It was all respectful. We went to them and asked, ‘We’d really appreciate if he could go to support his wife.’”

“I can’t wait to be able to support her,” he continued. “It’s the person you love most, man, and you see them out there in a position where someone could get hurt and you care. I’m just holding my breath and I have my little piece of paper right there ready calculating everything so I can’t wait.”

Owens added, “It’s always super nerve-wracking.”
