Jorge Ramos, Univision News Anchor for 40 Years, Leaving After Election

Jorge Ramos, the prominent anchor of Spanish-language television network Univision, is preparing to depart from his role post-November elections, as reported by numerous news outlets.

After 39 years with Univision, Ramos has spent nearly four decades in his position as a news anchor. He announced his plans in a statement, indicating that he will continue to lead “Noticiero Univision” until December, at which point he will reveal his future professional endeavors. “This is not a farewell,” he clarified, suggesting that while he is moving on, he remains committed to his duties until year’s end.

Since joining the network in 1987, Ramos has become synonymous with “Noticiero Univision” and has also hosted the public affairs program “Al Punto” and the streaming interview show “Algo Personal” on Univision’s platform. Expressing gratitude for his lengthy career at the network, he stated, “I am deeply grateful for these four decades at Univision and proud to be part of a team that has established strong leadership over the years.”

As for who might take over his role, there has yet to be an official announcement from the network. However, reports suggest that Enrique Acevedo is the likely candidate to succeed him. Univision’s leadership has publicly acknowledged Ramos’ significant contributions to the network and to the community it serves. Daniel Coronell, President of Univision News, expressed his respect for Ramos and assured that the network is prepared to uphold the high standards of journalistic excellence that have been its hallmark.

Throughout his tenure, Ramos has become renowned for his fearless reporting and commitment to truth, often confronting powerful figures. One notable incident occurred in 2019 when he and several Univision employees were briefly detained in Venezuela’s presidential palace after conducting an interview with President Nicolás Maduro. Their release came after about two hours, during which time their equipment and footage were seized.

Ramos is also well known for his confrontations with former President Donald Trump. This tension came to a head during a 2015 press conference in Dubuque, Iowa, when Ramos challenged Trump on his derogatory claims about Mexican immigrants. Following an attempt to ask a question, Ramos was removed by security. Their exchange highlighted a broader discourse on the traits of leadership and the treatment of minority communities. Ramos persistently advocated against normalizing what he described as dangerous rhetoric that could threaten democracy and discredit the Hispanic community.

In a weekly column he has penned for several years, he emphasized the importance of accountability and fact-checking, particularly in relation to Trump’s statements. He articulated the need for vigilance in confronting misinformation, declaring, “We must question and fact-check everything he says and does.”

As Ramos steps away from Univision after an impressive career, the impact he has made on journalism and the Hispanic community remains undeniable. His commitment to reporting and advocacy for underrepresented voices has set a standard in the broadcasting field that will continue to influence generations of journalists.

With the end of this chapter in his career approaching, anticipation grows surrounding his next professional steps while the network prepares for a future that will now be without one of its most recognizable figures.
