Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult Receive Standing Ovation for ‘The Order’ at Venice

Jude Law shone at the Venice Film Festival with his intense portrayal of an FBI agent fighting against neo-Nazi terrorists in Justin Kurzel’s crime thriller “The Order.” The film’s premiere received a seven-minute standing ovation, highlighting its profound impact.

“The Order” is rooted in real events from 1983 in Idaho. The film follows a lone FBI agent as he investigates a series of violent bank robberies and car heists. He soon discovers that these crimes are orchestrated by a dangerous domestic neo-Nazi group led by the radical Robert Jay Mathews, played by Nicholas Hoult. This group is plotting a war against the U.S. government.

Adapted from the 1989 book “The Silent Brotherhood” by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt, the film also stars Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, Alison Oliver, and Odessa Young.

Earlier in the day, during a press conference, Law emphasized the film’s significance in today’s context, where far-right ideologies are on the rise.

“Sadly, the relevance speaks for itself,” Law remarked. “It felt like a piece of work that needed to be made now. It’s always interesting finding a piece from the past that has some relevant relationship to the present day.”

Director Kurzel highlighted the film’s timely message, linking it to recent events. “On January 6, 2021, nooses were hung in front of the Capitol Building imitating a fictional insurrection from the 1970’s novel ‘The Turner Diaries,’ the first master plan for domestic terrorism in America,” Kurzel noted. He described “The Order” as “a manhunt into the depths of that hate, a foreshadowing of a divided America, a warning shot of what has been and what may come.”

Law’s previous visit to Venice was in 2016 for the satirical series “The Young Pope.” Hoult has been a familiar face at the festival since his role in 2009’s “A Simple Man” alongside Colin Firth.

“The Order” is set to be released in the U.S. by Vertical in December. Amazon Prime Video will distribute the film in several international territories.
