Jujutsu Kaisen Creator Admits “Huge Mistake” Involving Megumi’s Sister

The manga “Jujutsu Kaisen” has been diving deep into the struggles of Megumi Fushiguro, and with each new chapter, his journey becomes increasingly challenging. Recently, the creator of the manga expressed a significant regret involving Megumi’s sister, Tsumiki. As the series intensifies with its ongoing Shinjuku Showdown arc, balancing numerous characters and storylines has become more complex. This has led to certain characters not receiving the development they perhaps deserved.

Gege Akutami, the creator of “Jujutsu Kaisen,” initially intended for Megumi to be the main protagonist. Throughout the series, viewers have learned about several of Megumi’s family members, including his sister, Tsumiki, whom Megumi was striving to save during the Culling Game arc. Akutami, during a recent Jujutsu Kaisen art exhibition in Japan, admitted that not dedicating enough time to explore Tsumiki’s character was a “huge mistake.”

“In terms of what makes up the core of these two, there just wasn’t enough information to flesh out Tsumiki’s background, so I think that was a total failure,” Akutami confessed when questioned about developing Megumi’s storyline. The translator @soukatsu_ on X helped provide this insight. Akutami added, “This is one part where I feel like it was a huge mistake. I should have had Itadori and Tsumiki have a proper meeting just once… Itadori’s perspective is also the reader’s perspective, so I absolutely should not have moved the story forward without getting any insight on readers’ thoughts on Tsumiki. Something to reflect on!!”

Fans have observed that Tsumiki’s character remains largely unexplored, apart from a brief flashback into Megumi’s past. She is in a coma during the first half of the manga and undergoes a radical transformation during the Culling Game. Sadly, Tsumiki’s development has been sidelined amidst the series’ many events, and Akutami has acknowledged this missed opportunity to delve deeper into her character.

Nonetheless, there is still hope. “Jujutsu Kaisen” continues to release new chapters, and fans can keep up with the story through Viz Media’s digital Shonen Jump library and Shueisha’s Manga Plus service.
