Julia Louis-Dreyfus Shares Awkward ‘Veep’ Moment with Hillary Clinton

Julia Louis-Dreyfus recently shared an amusing instance of life imitating art. The actress, known for her role as fictional Vice President Selina Meyer on HBO’s “Veep,” recalled an intriguing experience on “Late Night” with Stephen Colbert.

During the show, Louis-Dreyfus revealed that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton once praised her performance in a letter. However, an email leak later unveiled Clinton’s true feelings in a more comical light. Clutching a document, she described her encounter with Clinton as both “exciting” and “divine.”

The first document, an envelope insert or buck slip Clinton sent in 2013, read: “Julia, you’re a great veep. Hope you can get gun control, immigration reform and job creation this season. All the best, Hillary Rodham Clinton. Dated 1/29/13.” Louis-Dreyfus read this with a playful wink, noting how nice the message was.

Stephen Colbert reminded viewers about the infamous 2016 email leaks involving Clinton. He had Louis-Dreyfus read an email exchange between Clinton and one of her advisers. In the email, Clinton inquired about a request from a friend asking her to sign something for “Julia Lewis-Dreyfus” of “Veep.” The adviser responded, “Let me brainstorm on this one, do some research. I confess I haven’t seen the show.”

The audience burst into laughter as Colbert displayed both the buck slip and a printout of the email, now encased in glass. Louis-Dreyfus admitted she framed them together, describing it as a significant memento.

“This represents to me Washington, D.C.,” Louis-Dreyfus said with a chuckle. “It’s kind of a little ‘Veep’ moment. It’s what we were satirizing very extremely on ‘Veep.’”

Louis-Dreyfus highlighted that she grew up in a staunchly Democratic household with politically active parents who always emphasized the importance of voting. In recognition of her contributions to the arts, she received the National Medal of Arts from President Joe Biden in 2021.

Clinton, who wrote the memoir “What Happened” after her 2016 election defeat and starred in the Apple TV+ documentary series “Gutsy,” has since endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 elections.

When Colbert suggested that the inadvertently public email by Clinton resembled a mishap by the character Mike McLintock from “Veep,” Louis-Dreyfus humorously countered, saying it would’ve been even “more botched” in the show. However, she also commended Clinton’s graceful handling of the situation.

“She obviously handled it very elegantly,” she concluded. “But anyway, there you go.”
