Julianne Hough has been in the spotlight with her debut book, co-hosting Dancing with the Stars, and her Kinrgy dance studio in Beverly Hills. However, the 36-year-old wasn’t always as confident in her career. Her insecurities were especially pronounced during her relationship with Ryan Seacrest, which began in 2010.

According to several reports, the Everything We Never Knew author faced significant insecurity during her three-year relationship with the American Idol host. She was worried that people would assume she was using Seacrest to boost her career.

The Footloose actress discussed this period of her life on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast. “The rug was swept up from underneath me, and I was just flying, and I was experiencing things that I didn’t even know existed,” Hough recalled.

She admitted to feeling insecure about the public’s perception of their relationship. “I was like, ‘I don’t ever want anybody to think that I’m with him for this reason.’ And so I then started playing smaller,” she added. Host Dax Shepard affirmed her feelings by saying, “You didn’t want to seem like you were out there to try to get your own attention or using him.”

The Grease Live! star further explained that Seacrest had previous experiences with people who might have used him, making her more cautious about how their relationship would appear publicly. “I, again, overcompensated. I was malleable to fit into exactly what somebody needed me to be for them to be happy,” she continued.

Hough revealed that these experiences led her to question her understanding of love. “I don’t know if I’ve ever truly been in love with someone, but I have loved the feeling of being loved… And so let me be what that needs to be so that I can be loved,” she explained.

“I’ve been in love with everybody I’ve ever dated, but have I?” Hough pondered. “I don’t wanna overanalyze it because every person I’ve also dated has been a very good person,” she concluded.

Hough mentioned that many people didn’t understand her reasons for breaking up with Seacrest, even though they appeared to be a strong couple. “One of the reasons I broke up with him was due to my wanting to make a name for myself without him,” she said.

She remembered how people in Los Angeles reacted when she decided to end the relationship. “When I decided to break things off… I had a lot of these Brentwood moms and producers that were like, ‘What are you doing? Your life is completely set up.’ And I was like, ‘But I didn’t build it.'”

Julianne Hough concluded that at the time, she was primarily focused on herself and self-preservation. “I didn’t think about what people thought. I was just wrestling on the inside… I definitely was in full self-preservation mode,” she recalled.
