Justin Fields Leads Steelers to Victory Over Chargers in 3-Game Win Streak

PITTSBURGH – Steelers quarterback Justin Fields is enjoying a career milestone, having achieved a three-game winning streak for the first time. He expressed that he has “grown a lot” this season and is “definitely feeling more confident.”

In a recent game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Fields showcased his skills, rushing for one touchdown while also throwing for another, leading his team to a 20-10 victory. “It means a lot, but at the end of the day it’s not just me winning games; it’s the whole team,” Fields commented, while noting that he has been starting since Russell Wilson was sidelined due to a calf injury. He added, “We definitely look forward to keeping it going next week versus Indy.”

The Steelers have started the season 3-0 for the first time since 2020, a year when the team boasted an 11-0 record before faltering in the last stretch of the regular season.

When asked if this streak challenges critics from his time with the Chicago Bears, where he finished with a disappointing 10-28 record over three years, Fields opted to redirect the focus. “I’m not really worried about that,” he said. “I’m more so into proving myself right. I know what kind of player I am.”

Fields expressed gratitude toward his teammates for their support, stating, “My teammates help me be great. Shout out to them—shout out to our defense, shout out to everybody else on the offense for pushing me each and every day at practice. It’s just a credit to them.” He concluded, “I’m definitely glad and just feeling good to be in this position.”

The match against the Chargers was a team effort in every sense. The offense celebrated its first multi-touchdown game of the season, while the defense shone brightly, recording five sacks and limiting the Chargers to negative net yards in the second half.

Remarkably, the Steelers managed this performance without two starting offensive linemen and starting outside linebacker Alex Highsmith, who exited the game with a groin injury by halftime. Coach Mike Tomlin remarked, “We knew it was going to be an entertaining game. They’re playing great defense. We were playing great defense. We had to challenge our defense to outperform theirs. I thought they did.”

The Steelers effectively neutralized the Chargers’ running game, holding league-leading rusher J.K. Dobbins to just 44 yards on 15 carries. In contrast, the Steelers’ running attack came alive in the second half, with running back Najee Harris gaining 67 yards on 14 carries against one of the toughest defenses in the league.

Fields also benefitted from significant contributions from his smaller wide receivers. He effectively targeted Scotty Miller and speedy Calvin Austin III, who made the most of the middle of the field for considerable gains, including a standout 55-yard touchdown by Austin.

After trailing with 173-112 yards in the first half, the Steelers reversed their fortunes in the second, amassing 234 yards while limiting the Chargers to a mere minus-5 yards of total offense.

“We knew what kind of game we were going to be in, and we knew that we didn’t play well enough in the first half,” Fields stated. He recognized their early mistakes, noting that Coach Tomlin’s halftime challenge prompted them to elevate their performance in the second half.

Despite throwing an interception in the third quarter—his first turnover of the season—and being sacked twice, Fields completed 25 of 32 passes for an impressive 245 yards, marking his highest passing yardage this season.

Following the win, Fields reflected on his growing comfort on the field: “Just overall seeing the field. I feel like I’m just very calm out there. Cool, calm and collected on the field, and really just that sense of peace out there.” He emphasized that he is no longer rushing his decisions.

Teammates have also taken notice of his progress. Right tackle Broderick Jones commented, “He continues to grow. Just because he’s a young player, folks think he really doesn’t know as much as he does.” He elaborated that Fields had to shoulder a lot of the pressure in Chicago, but now has more time to dissect defenses effectively.

“Once he starts throwing it over their head, and we start running it, then it is game over at that point,” Jones concluded.
