‘Kalki 2989 AD’ to Premiere Globally on Prime Video, Netflix

The global streaming premiere of the blockbuster Indian sci-fi epic “Kalki 2989 AD” is set to happen simultaneously on Prime Video and Netflix, but in different languages. The film has become the biggest Indian theatrical hit of the year, boasting a $131 million gross.

“Kalki 2989 AD” will be available in its original Telugu language, complete with dubs in Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam, along with English subtitles, on Prime Video starting from Aug. 22. A Hindi-language dubbed version will also be accessible on Netflix from the same day.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898 AD where nature has disappeared and darkness reigns, “Kalki 2989 AD” serves as the first installment of the Kalki Cinematic Universe. The narrative follows Bhairava, a bounty hunter, navigating through this dystopian era. The film’s universe had previously been introduced through a two-part animated series, “B&B: Bujji & Bhairava,” available exclusively on Prime Video.

Directed by Nag Ashwin and produced by Vyjayanthi Movies, “Kalki 2989 AD” boasts an illustrious cast including Prabhas as Bhairava, along with Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone, and Disha Patani.

Manish Menghani, the director of content licensing at Prime Video India, remarked, “‘Kalki 2898 AD’ has captivated audiences with its immersive storytelling and visionary portrayal of a post-apocalyptic future.”

Prabhas commented, “Working on ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ with a visionary director like Naga and an exceptional cast has been truly exhilarating. The film not only pushes the boundaries of storytelling with its blend of mythology and futuristic elements but also delves deep into the complexities of human nature.”

Producer C. Aswani Dutt mentioned that the film’s streaming release on Prime Video is a special way for Vyjayanthi Movies to celebrate its 50th year in the industry.

Director Ashwin stated, “With ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ I was keen to create a cinematic experience that breaks new ground, transcends traditional boundaries, and shares our cultural mythology on a global scale.”

Kamal Haasan, who plays the antagonist Supreme Yaskin in the film, described his involvement as “both memorable and humbling,” adding, “The film represents a significant leap forward for Indian cinema.”
