Kamala Harris’ Sister Maya Stuns in Pink Power Suit on DNC’s Final Night
Maya Harris, the sister of Vice President Kamala Harris, embraced power suiting for the final night of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center in Chicago. The lawyer and former senior policy adviser for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign wore a tailored double-breasted blazer with matching pants featuring a flared hemline.

Power suits were designed to convey authority and confidence in a male-dominated workplace. The concept emerged in the 1980s, characterized by tailored fits and bold colors, which helped women assert their presence in business environments. The pink power suit, specifically, has become a contemporary symbol of female empowerment, reclaiming a color often associated with fragility and femininity. The hue, along with green, are also colors of Kamala’s sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Maya Harris took the stage to talk about her sister and their late mother Shyamala Gopalan Harris. “Mommy understood the power and the possibility that comes with knowing and showing who you truly are. She knew we could be the authors of our own stories, just as she’d been the opportunity that she wanted for Kamala and me. That’s a distinctly American story,” Maya Harris said.

The 2024 Democratic National Convention took place in Chicago from Monday to Thursday. Held to officially nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate and affirm her choice of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz for vice president, the event also had its share of fashion statements.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama took the stage in a Monse crisscross jacket, First Lady Jill Biden sparkled in a custom Ralph Lauren dress, and Clinton brought her signature style in a tweed suit. Ella Emhoff, daughter of Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, and Ashley Biden, daughter of President Joe Biden, also embraced luxury fashion for the convention, with Ella wearing Thom Browne and Ashley going all-white in Gabriela Hearst.
