Kate Winslet portrays WWII frontline photographer in ‘Lee’

Aug. 14 (UPI) — A newly released trailer for Lee unveils how the Vogue war correspondent strove to capture impactful photographs revealing the grim realities of World War II.

The biopic, debuting on Sept. 27, features Kate Winslet as Elizabeth “Lee” Miller, a former model turned war photographer.

“Europe was at war and I felt useless,” Miller remarks in the teaser, launched by Roadside Attractions on Wednesday.

Determined to contribute meaningfully, she strides into the London Vogue office, proclaiming that her place is behind the camera.

According to an official synopsis: “Already a renowned photographer, Lee gains a job completing assignments for British Vogue, but is shocked by the restrictions placed on female photographers. As Hitler’s regime takes over Europe, Lee grows increasingly frustrated that her work is constrained by patriarchal rules. Determined to be where the action is, she defiantly pushes against the establishment and, with the blessing of her friend and editor Audrey Withers (Andrea Riseborough), Lee overcomes enormous obstacles to get herself to the frontline of World War II.”

The trailer reveals her snapping photos amidst an attack and capturing poignant images of women and children. One iconic scene features her in a photograph taken in Adolf Hitler’s bathtub on the day of his suicide.

“Even when I wanted to look away, I knew I couldn’t,” she reflects. “There are different kinds of wounds. Not just the ones you can see.”
