Katie Holmes Honors ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Actor Obi Ndefo: “Such a Kind Man”

Dawson’s Creek star Katie Holmes is paying tribute to Obi Ndefo, her former co-star whose death was announced on August 31.

Holmes, who played Joey Potter on the WB series, took to Instagram to express her condolences. She noted that Ndefo “was wonderful to work with and such a kind man. I send prayers and grace to his family. Rest in peace.”

Holmes also shared a post from Mary-Margaret Humes, who portrayed Dawson’s mom Gale on the series. Humes wrote, “It’s hard for me to conceive that you have left us, my dear friend. You always were and always will be a bright shining light. What an example of pure unfiltered love and tenacity you set as you faced life’s challenges of recent. I will cherish all of our messages of love and support to each other over the past few years. Rest in peace, sweet warrior.”

Ndefo’s sister Nkem announced his passing on Facebook Saturday night. The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.

Ndefo’s death comes five years after a devastating hit-and-run accident in Los Angeles that resulted in the loss of both his legs. Despite his injury, he remained dedicated to his health and recovery, continuing to actively teach yoga over the years.

After graduating from Yale University’s drama school, Ndefo took on several television roles, appearing in episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, The Wayans Bros., The Jamie Foxx Show, and 3rd Rock from the Sun.

His most memorable role was as Bodie Wells, the brother-in-law to Holmes’ Joey on Dawson’s Creek, a character he portrayed from 1998 to 2002.
