Keanu Reeves Secretly Stops at JoCo Bookstore to Sign Latest Book

Somewhere out there, a Keanu Reeves fan in Kansas City will cry themselves to sleep tonight knowing they missed an excellent chance to meet him on Wednesday.

The “John Wick” and “Matrix” star made a top-secret visit to Rainy Books in Fairway Wednesday morning where, cloistered away from the public in the basement, he signed 200 copies of his new novel, “The Book of Elsewhere.”

Reeves came to Kansas City to perform with his rock band, Dogstar, at the Uptown Theater Wednesday night. The grungy band, which Reeves first played with in the ‘90s and released a new album last year, recently kicked off its Summer Vacation Tour.

The store was alerted two weeks ago that he would stop by and autograph books, but employees were sworn to secrecy, bookseller Justin Dickinson told The Star.

“They were telling us we had to keep it under wraps,” Dickinson said.

When he finished signing books downstairs, Reeves walked upstairs into the bookstore, “but there weren’t any customers except for one person,” said Dickinson, one of only about six employees in the store at the time. “So that was kinda exciting for her.”

But once Reeves left, the store posted photos on their social media accounts and the news spread with great speed.

“People have been sharing it like crazy today,” Dickinson said. “We’ve had people calling all morning, placing orders, people texting individual coworkers. We’re selling out.”

He estimated that all 200 books Reeves autographed would be sold by day’s end. The book costs $30, before tax; no extra charge for the autographed ones.

“The Book of Elsewhere” came out in July. Co-written by Reeves and China Miéville, it tells the “story of a warrior’s fight through the ages,” Reeves has said.

It’s described as a genre-bending epic of ancient powers, modern war, and an outcast who cannot die. It’s inspired by the popular BRZRKR series of graphic novels Reeves launched in 2021.

Dickinson, who considers himself a big Reeves fan, described the Hollywood fan-favorite as “very quiet, reserved. He was very nice. He was just down to earth.”

Reeves got to the store around 10 a.m. as the store opened. And by 11, he was gone.
