Keith Urban: Miley Cyrus Sounds Like ‘an Ashtray,’ Criticizes New Country Artists

Keith Urban recently compared Miley Cyrus’ voice to ‘an ashtray’ during an interview on Nova 96.9’s Fitzy and Wippa with Kate Ritchie. Appearing on the show Thursday morning, the 56-year-old country music star discussed the 31-year-old singer’s talent. Co-host Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald asked, “Keith, can you tell us about Miley Cyrus and the talent of Miley Cyrus? You’ve performed with her before, haven’t you?”

Urban responded with high praise for the pop star, albeit in an unconventional way. “I’ve always loved Miley. I love that voice, man, that voice… she sounds like an ashtray. And I mean that as a compliment. She sounds like the carpet at the RSL!” he joked.

Besides his remarks about Miley, Urban also expressed his disdain for inauthentic pop artists who exploit country music for their gain, often disrespecting the industry in Nashville. “It’s a funny thing because you still need the support of the system in Nashville and if you go about it the right way, like Post (Malone) did, you’ll see the love,” Urban explained.

When Fitzy inquired about younger artists making a mark in the industry, Urban praised several newcomers. “They’re just rootsy, authentic, storytelling people. They’re legit. Aussies like legit. So Luke (Combs) is legit, Lainey Wilson is legit. Morgan Wallen’s legit. I think a lot of people are sick of the BS with a lot of artists… what’s real and what isn’t,” he said.

Just a few days prior, Urban had opened up about a surprising activity he shares with his wife, Nicole Kidman. The country music star admitted that he joins the 57-year-old actress in self-care routines, including skincare facials and LED light therapy face masks. Speaking on the Kyle & Jackie O Show to promote his world tour, Urban gave hosts Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson insight into his skincare regime.

“Do you enjoy the, you know, when you get the steaming facials? I like that,” Kyle, 53, asked Keith. Urban replied, “I’m always glad I do it. But I always forget to,” and revealed that he has even tried out the expensive LED masks designed to stimulate collagen and minimize redness and wrinkles.

When Kyle asked if he had tried an LED mask, Urban responded, “Yeah, they’re pretty good!” confirming that he joins Nicole and their daughters Sunday, 16, and Faith, 14, in the practice. Kyle then complimented Urban’s youthful appearance, attributing it to his skincare routine. “They obviously work better for you than me, you’re very handsome!” the radio host quipped.

Urban’s comments highlight not just his admiration for Miley Cyrus but also his disdain for inauthentic musicians and his unexpected beauty regimen shared with his family.
