Kelly Rowland Discusses Viral “Lose My Breath” TikTok Trend and Music Impact

There are some musical staples that will always be timeless, and Destiny’s Child’s 2004 hit “Lose My Breath” is definitely one of them. This uptempo track served as the first single from their fifth and final album, Destiny Fulfilled, and quickly became a favorite at HBCUs thanks to its heavy, addictive drums.

20 years later, the song is still making waves. It has resurfaced in multiple social media videos as part of the viral “Lose My Breath” challenge. In this trend, groups of friends perform a synchronized and fierce walk-off, reminiscent of the trio’s moves in the original music video. Many fans even perform the challenge at airports, wheeling their luggage behind them before taking off.

As the challenge has gained popularity, it has caught the attention of Kelly Rowland. She recently expressed her desire to participate in this social media phenomenon during an interview with VIBE about an exciting forthcoming announcement. The “Coffee” singer talked about the trend’s impact and her legacy as a founding member of one of the best-selling girl groups of all time.

“I want to do it so bad,” she confessed. “I’m going to do it,” she added, revealing that she would try it during an upcoming flight. “I have to just get there in time to do it. What outfit am I going to wear?”

While fans are paying homage to Destiny’s Child’s moves, Rowland noted that they aren’t perfectly replicating the group’s choreographed steps from the video. “The interesting thing is, to be honest, where they stop — me and the girls didn’t do that,” she said. “They made up a whole new one. On TikTok, I’m going to say, ‘This is how to do it.’”

Reflecting on her career and the musical legacy she has created alongside Beyoncé and Michelle Williams, Rowland shared her sense of gratitude. “It’s a blessing, to be honest, and the fact that people still want to dance to it, make TikToks to it, it’s just so cool to me,” she said. “It goes to show how rich our culture is, you know what I mean? You got to think about the origin of that — which are drumlines … HBCUs and how important that is. So our culture is just so rich and it’s just a gift that keeps on giving.”

“Lose My Breath” reached No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 2004, featured on the 3x certified platinum album Destiny Fulfilled. It also topped the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart and achieved notable positions on the Mainstream Top 40 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart.

In 2014, Beyoncé spoke to MTV News about the concept behind the Marc Klasfeld-directed music video. “It’s really a dance-off between a more sophisticated ‘in-fashion’ Destiny’s Child versus a more ‘street’ Destiny’s Child. And in the end, a third Destiny’s Child, even more fierce, takes over. It’s a lot of hard work for us because we have to learn three routines for the same song. People will be shocked because it’s different for us. They’ve never seen us really dance.”

Slightly different from the current TikTok trend, the music video opens with Beyoncé, Kelly, and Michelle strutting in stilettos and fur coats before transitioning to burgundy suits and streetwear for an alleyway dance-off. The dance moves vary, shifting from delicate to intense depending on which Destiny’s Child trio is in action. Finally, the "bougie" Destiny’s Child struts away in victory after a head-to-head battle with male dancers.

Kelly Rowland encourages everyone to check out her take on the “Lose My Breath” challenge and invites fans to revisit the iconic music video that started it all.
