Kentucky Lawmaker Recovers After Crashing Lawn Mower into Pool

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — State Senator Johnnie Turner of Kentucky is showing signs of recovery following a serious accident on his lawn mower that resulted in him falling into an empty swimming pool.

On Tuesday, he was able to sit up and communicate, making progress in his healing journey, according to a statement from Dustin Isaacs, a spokesman for the Kentucky Senate Republicans. His condition continued to improve into Wednesday.

“While he remains in ICU and in some pain, we are grateful for this positive progression,” Isaacs noted.

The incident occurred on Sunday when Turner, a Republican from Harlan, accidentally drove his mower into the deep end of his home swimming pool. While authorities have not released specific details on what led to the mishap, it has been a serious setback for the senator.

Turner was initially treated at a local hospital before being moved to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville for further care. His family has asked for prayers from the public as they hope for his swift recovery, a sentiment echoed by Kentucky Senate President Robert Stivers.

As a prominent figure in the state, Turner represents several counties in eastern Kentucky. He successfully entered the state Senate in 2020, when he defeated an incumbent Democrat with a nearly identical name, marking a significant political achievement.

In May of this year, Turner won his Republican primary against two opponents, demonstrating his continued popularity within his party. However, he faces a challenge from an independent candidate in the upcoming November election.

Prior to serving in the Senate, Turner was a member of the Kentucky House from 1999 to 2002, showcasing his long-standing involvement in the state’s legislative activities. His dedication to public service is evident in his legislative work and community engagement.
