Kraven the Hunter Director Plans Next Sony Movie

Just hours before a new trailer for Kraven dropped, Sony Pictures secured a screenplay from J.C. Chandor, the director of the film. Chandor’s upcoming project is said to be a drama focusing on the investigation of a murder within a wealthy family. This marks a return to the thematic elements of Chandor’s earlier works, such as Margin Call and A Most Violent Year. These films were instrumental in establishing Chandor’s reputation and eventually led to him helming a Spider-Man spinoff.

According to Deadline, which first reported the deal, the initial draft of the screenplay is already completed, and casting discussions are underway. This progress indicates that production could start soon. Meanwhile, Kraven is set for release on December 13th.

“I’m extremely proud of the work we have all done together on Kraven, and when the movie finally gets its chance to be seen I think it’s gonna surprise the hell out of a lot of people,” Chandor told Deadline. “As for what’s next for me, as always that’s up to the moviemaking gods.”

While this isn’t a direct confirmation, it aligns with the notion that Sony and Chandor had a fruitful collaboration during the post-production of Kraven, despite potential challenges stemming from the earlier Madame Web project.

The official description of the film states, “Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his infamous clash with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film.”

Alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the movie features an ensemble cast. Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose of West Side Story fame plays Kraven’s longtime love interest and voodoo priestess, Calypso. The cast also includes Fred Hechinger, Christopher Abbott from A Most Violent Year as The Foreigner, Alessandro Nivola of The Many Saints of Newark as The Rhino, and Russell Crowe who plays Nikolai Kravinoff.

Kraven the Hunter is set to premiere in theaters on December 13th.
