Ksenia Karelina Sentenced to 12 Years in Russian Prison

Russian-American ballerina Ksenia Karelina has been sentenced to 12 years in a penal colony by a Russian court after pleading guilty to treason. Her conviction follows her arrest earlier this year during a visit to Russia, where she reportedly donated $51 to a humanitarian group based in the U.S. that aids Ukrainians affected by the ongoing conflict.

Karelina’s legal representative, Mikhail Mushailov, indicated that she intends to appeal the court’s decision. “She acknowledged her guilt regarding the transfer of funds, but she did not admit any intention to support organizations that might use the money for anti-Russian activities,” Mushailov stated. He emphasized that Karelina was unaware her donation could be misused in such a manner.

The Russian authorities accused Karelina of fundraising for the Ukrainian military. She was detained in January while preparing to return to her family in Yekaterinburg, a trip made possible by a plane ticket gifted by her boyfriend.
