LaLiga Chief Facing Reprimand in Real Madrid’s CVC Case Appeal
Javier Tebas, president of LaLiga, has received a “public reprimand” from Spain’s Administrative Sports Court (TAD) due to a complaint submitted by Real Madrid.
The proceedings against Tebas were initiated in July after Real Madrid formally raised their concerns. The club accused him of overstepping his authority and lacking transparency during the assembly convened in August 2021, where an agreement with investment firm CVC regarding TV rights was discussed with other clubs.
Although Tebas has managed to avoid any suspension, LaLiga issued a statement on Friday expressing strong disagreement with TAD’s decision and indicating plans to appeal the ruling.
The statement detailed that TAD determined that Tebas had violated procedural rules by calling the General Assembly on 12 August 2021 with only eight days’ notice rather than the required ten days. This was done under an urgent procedure which did not adequately clarify the reasons for such urgency.
LaLiga countered this claim, asserting that there was no wrongdoing on Tebas’s part. The statement emphasized that the call for the General Assembly adhered to all legal requirements.
In December 2021, a majority of LaLiga clubs supported a €2 billion ($2.2 billion) investment deal with CVC Capital Partners. This deal faced significant opposition from several clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Athletic Club.
