Lana Del Rey Says Country Album ‘Lasso’ Won’t Heavily Depart from Current Sound

Lana Del Rey has been teasing for months that her next album, Lasso, will be a country record. However, fans shouldn’t worry about an entirely new direction. The alt-pop star promises it won’t stray too far from her signature sound.

In a recent interview with Vogue ahead of her headlining set at Paris’ Rock en Seine music festival on Wednesday, August 21, Del Rey assured that her distinctive style will anchor her new project. “All my albums are somewhat rooted in Americana, unless it’s an album like Honeymoon which has a jazz flair, so I don’t think it will be a heavy departure,” she said.

She added, “If anything, it will just be a little lighter lyrically, and more pointed in a classic country, American, or Southern Gothic production — which again, so many of my songs already are.”

Although there’s no set release date yet, Lasso will follow last year’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd? which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. She initially announced that the new project could be expected this September, revealing its title in January at the Billboard x NMPA Songwriter Awards. “We’re going country,” she proclaimed at the time. “It’s happening.”

Since the release of Ocean Blvd, the “Summertime Sadness” singer has dropped several singles. These include “Say Yes to Heaven,” “Lost at Sea” and “Hollywood Bowl” with her father, Rob Grant, as well as “Suburban House” with Holly Macve, and a cover of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Most recently, she released “Tough” with Quavo and hinted at more new music.

While speaking to Vogue, she teased: “We have two more coming out by the end of the year!”
