LeBron James, Jayson Tatum, Anthony Edwards Star in ‘Starting 5’ Trailer

In an effort to promote Netflix’s upcoming docuseries on five NBA players, the stars of ‘Starting 5’ got on a group chat to share details about the new show. All five players, including LeBron James, Jayson Tatum, Anthony Edwards, Jimmy Butler, and Domantas Sabonis, shared their excitement over the show in this new trailer.

The show was announced earlier this year and will follow these stars throughout their journey in the 2023-24 NBA season. Each player had a different journey last season, and it will be interesting to have a behind-the-scenes glimpse into these players and their teams’ reactions to key events last season.

For example, LeBron James had a unique season last year. He and the Lakers became the winners of the inaugural NBA Cup and were able to squeeze their way into the playoffs, only to be trounced by the Denver Nuggets in a rematch of the previous year’s Western Conference Finals.

As for Jayson Tatum, he had perhaps the best possible season out of the group of players, as he and the Celtics were able to win the NBA championship last season. While Tatum struggled in the playoffs, there is no doubt he played a massive role in the championship win.

Without a doubt, Anthony Edwards was the breakout star of the NBA last season, making a massive run with the Timberwolves, leading them to their first Western Conference Finals in 20 years.

As for Jimmy Butler, he and the Heat brought their signature intensity and grit this season. But Butler eventually got injured and missed much of the Heat’s series with the Celtics.

As for Domantas Sabonis, he and the Kings had a turbulent year and missed out on the playoffs the previous year. It will be interesting to see how he and the Kings react to such a disappointing year for them.

If this docuseries is successful, it will garner a lot of interest in the following year’s Netflix documentary project which followed the 2024 Team USA roster in their quest for the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

Netflix has invested a fair amount into stylized, dramatized sports content, including documentaries, and it is good to see this trend continuing.

The trend of Netflix making sports documentaries really kicked off after ‘The Last Dance’ docuseries chronicled Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls dynasty. The program found great viewership success, bolstered by the absence of real sport at the time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since then, Netflix has also released a documentary about former NBA star Tony Parker and one about the 2008 ‘Redeem Team’. On top of that, they are continuously looking for opportunities for further documentary and serialized sports content, so expect more documentaries about NBA stars and teams in the future.

Fans will no doubt be excited to see how this docuseries pans out, and how players react to the ups and downs of the season will make for great content. ‘Starting 5’ releases on Netflix on October 9th, just a few weeks ahead of the new NBA season.
