Legacy of Monsters Moves Production to Australia

The second season of Apple TV+ and Legendary Entertainment’s “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” will be filmed in Queensland, Australia. This marks a significant shift from the first season, which was predominantly shot in British Columbia, Canada.

Screen Queensland, the state’s location attraction agency, announced that the show would benefit from state subsidies provided through Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy. The production is expected to be the largest series ever filmed in the state, generating over A$115 million ($76 million).

This move follows other successful Legendary Entertainment productions in Queensland, including “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire,” “Godzilla vs. Kong,” and “Kong: Skull Island.”

“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” centers on two siblings who, after the massive battle between Godzilla and the Titans in San Francisco, discover their family’s deep ties to the secretive organization Monarch. Spanning three generations, the dramatic saga uncovers hidden secrets and the far-reaching effects of monumental, earth-shattering events.

The second season is executive produced by Chris Black, along with Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell from Safehouse Pictures. Executive producers also include Matt Shakman, Andy Colville, and Jen Roskind. Matsuoka Hiro and Arita Takemasa represent Japan’s Toho Co., Ltd., the owner of the Godzilla character. Toho licensed the rights to Legendary for the series, bolstered by the two companies’ longstanding film franchise partnership.

Queensland’s Minister for the Arts, Leeanne Enoch, expressed pride in welcoming the series, emphasizing the positive impact on local employment. “Season two of ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ will provide jobs for around 1,000 local cast and crew,” she said. “It’s a big boost for small businesses who will contribute to the production, ranging from accommodation to medical services, catering, security, transport, and wardrobe supplies.”
