Donahue was renowned for hosting The Phil Donahue Show, later simply known as Donahue. This groundbreaking program marked the first instance where a talk show included and encouraged audience participation. Winfrey once described the genre that Donahue pioneered as “issue-driven straight talk.”

According to his family, Donahue, referred to as a “groundbreaking TV talk show journalist,” passed away Sunday night at home. He was “surrounded by his wife of 44 years Marlo Thomas, his sister, his children, grandchildren, and his beloved golden retriever Charlie.” The family’s statement reiterated that he died peacefully following a lengthy illness.

Debuting in 1967, The Phil Donahue Show was picked up for syndication in 1969 and went on to be broadcast on over 200 stations across the United States. Unlike other shows of the time that concentrated on celebrity interviews, Donahue maintained a focus on journalism, addressing a variety of critical issues with his audience.
