Life Is About More Than Just Sex

Omarion once felt he was living a double life. On one hand, he was a singer known as a sex symbol, and on the other, there was the man behind the music. However, it wasn’t until he became celibate that everything shifted for him.

The Unbothered author appeared on André Duqum’s Know Thyself podcast and opened up about his three-year journey with celibacy, detailing how it affected his mental and spiritual wellness.

“When I decided to become celibate, it was because I was searching for something more. A lot of people would be like, ‘Oh, he’s young. He’s on top of the world. He just put out an album. Like you ain’t out here f**king these h**s?’ I’m like, nah. There’s more to life than that.”

He recalled how he was able to decenter sex in his life. “Always being a dancer, you listen to your body,” explained the father of two. “It’s interesting that at that particular moment in my life, I kind of took it on as a challenge.” Despite being hyper-sexualized as a teenager in B2K, Omarion acknowledged that most of his songs were about “making love,” but that shifted when he delved more into Christianity.

“It was just an interesting time. I was really studying my Bible, and ultimately, like I said in my book Unbothered, it wasn’t for me. But it allowed me to step out of this world and the responsibility of being a sex symbol and being a young adult.” He added, “In hindsight, it was preparing me for my contribution to music, to be integral in my words and what I’m saying. Not having to really live a double life.”

The “Post To Be” crooner is aware that being a celibate celebrity is “very weird to some people,” but he affirmed that “there’s more to life than that.”

Omarion noted, “I’m not here to judge anyone, because we all have our journey. I just found myself in that position of wanting to understand my energy, give myself time to grow. And also, I knew that if I could control two areas of my life, which are food and the urge of sex, then nothing can stop me.”

He was thrilled to know that he wasn’t alone as a celibate sex symbol upon learning that Lenny Kravitz is also celibate—and has been for nearly a decade.

This wasn’t the first time Omarion opened up about celibacy. The 39-year-old appeared on Angela Yee’s Lip Service podcast last year and shared that his celibacy was split into “three phases.” He was celibate with a girlfriend who prided him on not making sex the focal point of their relationship.

He then regained a renewed sense of power over himself, and the final phase was how celibacy influenced his spirituality. Watch above.
