Lil Yachty Claims He Could Outshine Joe Budden on a Track

Lil Yachty recently made some bold claims in an interview with Joe Budden, declaring that he could outperform the veteran rapper on a track.

On Thursday (Aug. 8), a new episode of Lil Yachty’s A Safe Place Podcast featured Budden. They discussed various topics, including Yachty’s controversial comments on New York fashion and the current streaming strikes. What grabbed the headlines, however, was Yachty’s assertion that he could outperform Budden if they recorded a song together.

“Do you think, right now, if me and you went in there, Joe, you could pen a better verse than me?” Yachty asked Joe Budden around the 46:30 mark of the interview.

“Who’s picking the beat,” Budden retorted.

“Obviously not you,” Yachty shot back. The conversation then turned into playful banter about each other’s beat choices. Budden eventually conceded, “If you give me one of them Metroid beats, then you will have the better verse.”

Not backing down, Yachty added, “I’ma dust off one of my Alchemist beats.”

Budden responded, “If I can get to Alchemist…I’m not even dignifying this. That would be just a good content piece. I would do it for fun because I’m retired. If I were not retired, just the thought of this would be an insult to me. Over an Alchemist beat, I wouldn’t even allow it.”

As the podcast continued, Yachty mentioned he hadn’t slept, prompting Budden to quip, “If that Alchemist beat was up and you was no sleep…”

Yachty quickly interjected, “Nah, I would still kill you.”

The dynamic between Lil Yachty and Joe Budden is particularly notable given their past contentious relationship. Back in 2017, Budden criticized Yachty, saying he wasn’t hip-hop and accused him of damaging the culture. This led to a social media battle, and Yachty even sported a “F**k Joe Budden” hoodie at a concert. Despite their beef, they lightened the mood later that year by challenging each other to a dodgeball game.

During the interview, Yachty asked Budden if he thought the Atlanta rapper would still be active in the rap game.

“No,” Budden replied bluntly around the 23:40 mark. “Not at all. Are you sh*tting me? You have defied the odds, ni**a. I ain’t even gonna lie to you. I didn’t think you would be this good…I didn’t think you would be able to pen some things you’ve penned…You’ve created your own lane. I can’t be prouder of you.”

The episode revealed a more congenial side of their relationship, suggesting that their past conflicts have been resolved to some extent. Though Budden has retired from rapping to focus on his podcasting career, his enduring influence in the hip-hop community seems to be acknowledged, even by those he has previously criticized.
