Linda Deutsch, AP Court Reporter for Manson & OJ Simpson Trials, Dies at 80

Longtime Associated Press court reporter Linda Deutsch has died at the age of 80, according to the AP. Deutsch covered the trials of Charles Manson, O.J. Simpson, Michael Jackson, and numerous others over her nearly 50-year career with the news agency. She began working with the AP in the late 1960s and retired in 2015.

Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2022, Deutsch was initially treated successfully. Unfortunately, her cancer returned this summer, and she passed away at her Los Angeles home on Sunday.

Throughout her career, Deutsch covered a range of high-profile trials. These included those of the police officers charged with beating Rodney King, Patty Hearst, Phil Spector, the Menendez Brothers, “Night Stalker” Richard Ramirez, and “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski, among others.

Deutsch’s career in court reporting began in 1969 with the trial of Sirhan Sirhan, the man who assassinated Robert F. Kennedy.

“She was an incomparable friend to hundreds of people who will miss her wit, wisdom, charm, and constant inquisitiveness,” longtime friend Edith Lederer told the AP.

According to Narek Petrosian, a nurse from Olympia Hospice Care, Deutsch passed away surrounded by family and friends.
