The Greatest Night in Pop , a detailed look into the 1985 recording session that birthed “We Are the World,” is nominated for outstanding documentary or nonfiction special — and Lionel Richie is celebrating this milestone.

“I am still amazed by what we accomplished in 1985 and I’m even more amazed after receiving an Emmy nomination for ‘The Greatest Night In Pop,’” the iconic musician shared. “It has been an absolute joy to bring this historical moment to life alongside @netflix. A big thank you and congratulations to all artists and participants for making ‘We Are The World’ happen, and thank you to the @televisionacad for recognizing our documentary.”

The documentary captures the gathering of 45 all-star musicians, including Richie, on January 25, 1985. These talented individuals set aside their egos to record a song aimed at supporting African famine relief, a track that would leave a lasting imprint on global pop culture.

The Greatest Night in Pop showcases never-before-seen footage detailing the planning and writing process of the song, as well as scenes from Henson Studios where the memorable recording took place.

In addition to its nomination for outstanding documentary or nonfiction special, the film is also a contender in the categories of directing for a documentary/nonfiction program and sound editing for a nonfiction or reality program.
