Former Republican Representative Liz Cheney has publicly declared her support for Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential race, resolving weeks of speculation regarding her position on the Democratic ticket.

Cheney, who co-chaired the House committee investigating the events surrounding the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, has emerged as a prominent critic of former President Donald Trump. Her announcement took place during an event at Duke University, where she expressed her concerns about the continued threat Trump poses to the country.

In a video shared on the social media platform X, Cheney underscored the urgency of her decision. She stated, “I don’t believe that we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states.” She emphasized her commitment to the Constitution and her deep reflection on the implications of Trump’s influence.

Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, positioned herself as one of Trump’s staunchest critics within the Republican Party. Her choice to support Harris aligns her with several other Republicans, including former Representatives Adam Kinzinger and Denver Riggleman, who have also endorsed the Vice President. Recently, over 200 former members of the Bush administration and supporters of the late Senator John McCain and Senator Mitt Romney also expressed their backing for Harris.

In the wake of the January 6 incident, Cheney was part of the House Republican leadership but faced significant backlash for her condemnation of Trump. As a result, she lost her leadership position and was among the few Republicans willing to participate in the Democrat-led Jan. 6 committee.
