Lupe Suggests Drake Purchase Dame Dash’s Share in Reasonable Doubt LP

Dame Dash has decided to sell his share of Jay-Z’s iconic debut album, Reasonable Doubt, and Lupe Fiasco is urging Drake to buy it.

On Friday (July 19), Dame Dash took to Instagram to announce that he is putting his one-third share of the 1996 classic album, Reasonable Doubt, up for sale. Along with an image of the album’s black-and-white cover artwork, Dame’s caption read, “This s**t is for sale 1/3 … only real inquiries only.”

The post generated a flurry of comments, but one particularly notable suggestion came from Lupe Fiasco. The Chicago rapper proposed that Drake should be the one to acquire the valuable share of the album.

“@champagnepapi will keep it safe for generations to come,” Lupe wrote in a now-deleted comment. “This is grail and influenced an innumerable amount of rappers to see it peddle such a lack of grace genuinely hurts my feelings a little bit.

“But also on savages s**t f**k it…either donate it to museums for safekeeping or seriously let Drake make an offer so he can put it where it needs to be,” he added.

Lupe concluded his comment with, “Or just keep the s**t OG you should be infinitely proud of this. Without it there is no me as I am and I’m sure other MC’s will agree,” along with a prayer hands emoji.

According to court documents obtained by XXL in February 2024, a judge ordered Dame Dash to sell his stake in Roc-A-Fella Records to settle a judgment from a lawsuit he had lost. Despite opposition from Jay-Z and Kareem “Biggs” Burke, who own the remaining two-thirds of Roc-A-Fella, the judge allowed the sale of Dame’s one-third share.

The legal troubles for Dame Dash date back to January 2019, when film producer Josh Webber filed a defamation and copyright infringement lawsuit against him related to the 2019 film Dear Frank. By September 2022, a judge sided with Webber, ordering Dame to pay $705,400 plus $117,884.71 in legal fees. When Dame failed to pay, Webber requested the judge to seize Dame’s assets to cover the debt.

There have been speculations about potential buyers for Dame’s share. On the It Is What It Is podcast, Cam’ron and Ma$e hinted at possibly being interested in purchasing the share, although they laughed off questions about it with a degree of ambiguity.

In a January 2023 interview with the Veuit Podcast, Dame Dash revealed that Jay-Z had offered him $1.5 million for his share, but he declined the offer. “They offered me like $1.5 million—Jay-Z—I was like, that’s some disrespectful s**t,” Dame said. “So, I guess I have to sell it someplace else.”

Now, with Dame Dash openly declaring his intent to sell, it remains to be seen who will step up to buy the stake in this groundbreaking album. Whether it’s Drake, another high-profile artist, or even an institution aimed at preserving musical heritage, the sale will certainly draw significant attention.

It’s a pivotal piece of hip-hop history, and its next owner will carry the responsibility of preserving its legacy for future generations.
