Lupita Nyong’o and Her Cat Take the “Quiet Place Challenge” on TikTok

It’s not uncommon for movies to inspire social media trends, and that’s definitely the case with A Quiet Place: Day One. The film, a prequel to John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place, depicts the first invasion of Earth by aliens who are highly sensitive to sound, making silence a key to survival. The story focuses on Samira and her cat, Frodo, as they navigate this perilous new reality. This concept has inspired many TikTok users to see if their own cats could be as quiet as Frodo in a Quiet Place-like situation.

Recently, star Lupita Nyong’o joined this social media trend, putting her own cat to the test with surprising results. Nyong’o and her cat, Yoyo, took the challenge to see if they could survive in A Quiet Place, sharing the experience on TikTok.

“By popular demand! We’re going to see if we would survive in A Quiet Place,” Nyong’o said in her video, holding Yoyo and running back and forth in her home. Impressively, Yoyo remained perfectly silent throughout the test. A single sound was heard at one point, but Nyong’o clarified in the caption, “that sound was me.”

Interestingly, Nyong’o wasn’t always a cat lover. Although she is now a “very proud cat mom”—a sentiment she expressed in her TikTok caption—she revealed that she was actually afraid of cats before making A Quiet Place: Day One. “I was afraid of cats when I started this movie,” she shared with Entertainment Weekly. “By the end of the movie, I was crying leaving that cat. Now, I am definitely a cat mom. I have my cat’s fur all over me, and I think of it as a symbol of affection, which I never imagined I would.”

The film A Quiet Place: Day One sets the scene for the origin of the dystopian world fans are familiar with. Here’s a brief description of the movie: Experience the day the world fell silent. When Samira (Lupita Nyong’o) returns to New York City, a routine trip turns into a terrifying ordeal as creatures that hunt by sound attack. Alongside her cat Frodo and an unexpected ally, played by Joseph Quinn, Samira must make her way through a city that has become eerily quiet. The film also stars Djimon Hounsou and Alex Wolff, promising an intense, suspenseful thriller.

A Quiet Place: Day One is available to buy or rent digitally starting July 30th and will be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 8th.
