Maren Morris and Son Threatened After She Condemned Morgan Wallen’s Racial Slur

Maren Morris has revealed that she and her 4-year-old son, Hayes, were subjected to death threats after she criticized country singer Morgan Wallen for his use of a racial slur in 2021.

On an episode of Sophia Bush’s “Work in Progress” podcast, the 34-year-old singer opened up about the frightening experience, saying, “I mean, the death threat portion for me as a young mother was, yeah, obviously, like, scary.”

She emphasized that the threats were not only directed at her but also at her son. “It wasn’t death threats against me. It was against my son, too. So it’s like, ‘Oh, wow. Now we’re involving the kids, the ones that you cared so much about,’” she explained.

Morris, who came out as bisexual in June, shares Hayes with her ex-husband, Ryan Hurd. The couple finalized their divorce in January.

The incident in question dates back to February 2021, when Wallen was caught on video using the N-word during a night out with friends in Nashville. “Take care of this pussy ass n—-r,” the “Whiskey Glasses” singer said as he headed toward his home. Wallen later admitted he was “embarrassed” by his actions and apologized, saying, “There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologize for using the word. I promise to do better.”

Morris was among several celebrities who publicly condemned Wallen. She took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express her disapproval, stating, “It actually IS representative of our town because this isn’t his first ‘scuffle’ and he just demolished a huge streaming record last month regardless.” She continued, “We all know it wasn’t his first time using that word. We keep them rich and protected at all costs with no recourse.”

Wallen has not publicly responded to Morris’ latest comments on the matter.

During her appearance on the “Work in Progress” podcast, Morris further discussed the backlash she faced for her statements. She reflected on how people were offended by her criticism of Wallen, noting, “I think it’s because they’re not only, like, defending the person that said this, but they are taking it personally as if I’m criticizing them,” adding, “which I think says, you know, a lot more about their interpretation of criticism and what that content was than me as a person.”

Despite the threats and backlash, Morris remains unapologetic. “I don’t regret it, I don’t apologize. I feel the exact same way as I did that day. Don’t be racist. Don’t be transphobic. Don’t be homophobic,” she asserted.

Morris has been an outspoken advocate for marginalized groups, including the LGBTQ+ community. Her advocacy has often put her at odds with many in the country music scene, which tends to have a conservative fanbase.

In 2022, Morris called out Brittany Aldean, wife of country star Jason Aldean, after Brittany made remarks thanking her parents for letting her have a “tomboy” phase without “changing [her] gender.” Morris responded to Brittany’s comments by sharing misinformation about “the genital mutilation of children” and criticizing her as “Insurrection Barbie.”

This feud has only added to Morris’ tension with the country music community. She announced her departure from the genre in September 2023, saying she felt it was “burning itself down.” However, she later clarified in November that she had no plans to leave country music, describing the headlines as “hyperbolic.” “You can’t, like, scrub the country music out,” she told Jimmy Fallon.

Despite the challenges, Morris continues to stand by her convictions, advocating for progress and inclusivity within the music industry.
