Mariah Carey Heartbroken: Mother and Sister Die on Same Day

Mariah Carey recently shared the heartbreaking news of losing not just one but two family members.

The acclaimed “We Belong Together” and “Fantasy” singer revealed in a statement to The Times on Monday, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend.” In a tragic turn of events, she added, her older sister also “lost her life on the same day.”

Mariah did not provide additional details regarding the timing, locations, or causes of death for her mother and sister.

The five-time Grammy winner, now 55, expressed feeling “blessed” for having had the chance to spend the last week with her mother, Patricia Carey. Patricia was a former opera singer who, along with Alfred Roy Carey, welcomed Mariah into the world on March 27, 1969. However, the couple separated when Mariah was just 3 years old.

In her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” the singer elaborated on her complex relationship with her mother. She described their bond as a “prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment.”

The memoir also delved into Mariah’s strained relationship with her sister, whom she accused of drugging her with Valium, offering her cocaine and cigarettes, and attempting “to sell me out to a pimp.” She credited therapy for helping her “rename and reframe my family.”

“My mother became Pat to me, Morgan my ex-brother and Alison my ex-sister,” she wrote, as quoted by People. “I had to stop expecting them to one day miraculously become the mommy, big brother, and big sister I fantasized about.”

On Monday, Mariah conveyed her gratitude for “everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
