Mariah Carey Mourns the Loss of Her Mother and Sister on the Same Day

Mariah Carey’s mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison, have passed away.

Mariah Carey confirmed the heartbreaking news through a statement to People, recounting a tragic coincidence that saw both her mother and sister dying on the same day.

“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Carey said.

She expressed gratitude for having spent the last week with her mother before her passing. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” Carey concluded.

No additional details surrounding the deaths of Patricia and Alison were provided.

Mariah Carey had often spoken openly about her complex relationship with her mother. In her memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” she delved into the intricate dynamics between them.

“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions,” she wrote.

Carey described their relationship as a “prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s,” she added.

Carey also dedicated a part of her memoir to her mother. “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always,” she wrote.

Despite the complexity of their relationship, Carey and her mother shared special moments, including performing together. Patricia, an opera singer, joined Carey for a Christmas special in 2010 titled “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You.”

The relationship between Carey and her sister Alison was similarly complicated. Carey revealed in her memoir that it was “emotionally and physically safer for me not to have any contact” with Alison.
