Mariah Carey Reveals Mother and Sister Passed Away on the Same Day

Singer Mariah Carey is grieving after experiencing two profound losses on the same day, with the passing of her mother and sister.

The singer shared a heartfelt statement with CNN and People magazine, saying, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”

In her message, Mariah Carey did not disclose the causes of death for her mother, Patricia Carey, aged 87, or her sister, Alison Carey, aged 63. She expressed gratitude for having spent time with her mother, a Julliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, shortly before her passing.

“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” Mariah Carey wrote.

The singer has previously described her relationship with her mother as “complicated” in her memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.” She wrote, “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities.”

Mariah Carey had also collaborated musically with her mother, performing “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus” on the 2010 album “Merry Christmas II You,” as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

CNN reported that Mariah Carey and her sister were estranged. Alison Carey had sued the singer in 2021, claiming intentional infliction of emotional distress due to content in Mariah’s memoir. Alison accused her sister of using the book “to humiliate and embarrass” her.

Mariah Carey is the youngest of Patricia Carey’s three children with Alfred Carey. The couple divorced when the singer was just three years old. Mariah’s father passed away in 2002, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Known as the “Queen of Christmas,” Mariah Carey is scheduled to begin her annual Christmas concerts on November 6, with the tour concluding on December 17.
