Netflix’s new star, Mason Thames, recently discussed his experiences with high school, social media, and his upcoming role in the live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon.” The 17-year-old actor revealed that he finally got a taste of a “real high school experience” through his role in Netflix’s latest film, “Incoming.”

During a house party-themed event for “Incoming,” Thames opened up about the fun he had on set, his limited experiences with high school, and why he rarely posts on social media. As a working actor, Thames attended high school only up to his freshman year before completing his education online. However, participating in “Incoming” — which follows a group of high school freshmen who crash a party, resulting in chaos — gave him a glimpse of what high school could be like.

“I didn’t really have an actual high school experience, so getting to do this movie is the closest, wildest thing I have to it,” Thames shared. “If high school was as wild as this movie, I’d be terrified.”

When asked for advice to freshmen, Thames joked, “I wouldn’t listen to my advice,” but added earnestly, “I would just say make friends and stick with them.”

Thames also stars in the upcoming live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon” as Hiccup, a role he is extremely grateful for. “Not a day goes by where I don’t think how lucky, fortunate, and grateful I am to have these opportunities and these awesome people around me,” he said, gesturing to his “Incoming” castmates.

He expressed his excitement about the “How to Train Your Dragon” role, stating, “It was some of the most fun I’ve ever had in my life.” He even noted that the character of Hiccup still influences his daily life, saying, “I’d be walking around sometimes and I’d start running like Hiccup.”

Interestingly, Thames is quite inactive on social media, a rarity for someone his age. Despite having millions of followers across TikTok and Instagram, he rarely posts. “I’ve been asleep for a while on social media. I do need to get back on it, maybe I’ll post today… We’ll see. But I’m going to try,” he told TooFab.

Thames enjoys the interactions with fans that social media provides, though, admitting, “I’m not on it very much, but I love seeing reactions, especially with fans. Anytime I get to interact, I love it so much. I love all of them, it’s awesome but I do need to be on it more.”

He demonstrated this by resharing Netflix’s post of the “Incoming” cast at their premiere on his Instagram story, a small but significant gesture for his followers.

Starring alongside Loren Gray, Raphael Alejandro, Ramon Reed, Bardia Seiri, Isabella Ferreira, Ali Gallo, and Thomas Barbusca, Thames leads the cast of “Incoming,” now available for streaming on Netflix.
