Matt Bomer’s Hulu Sitcom Dubbed ‘Spiritual Cousin’ of ‘The Golden Girls’

Matt Bomer has described his new Hulu sitcom, Mid-Century Modern, as the “spiritual cousin” to The Golden Girls. Initially thought to be a reboot of the iconic eighties series that aired for seven seasons, Bomer is setting the record straight on what makes his show unique yet familiar.

Despite going off the air over thirty years ago, The Golden Girls remains a beloved sitcom celebrated to this day. From pop-ups and endless merchandise to marathons and cosplay, the legendary characters of Blanche, Sophia, Dorothy, and Rose continue to capture the hearts of fans. Their quirky, spunky, and sassy personas make them relatable and endearing, sparking hopes for a revival among diehard followers.

When it was revealed that Nathan Lane and Matt Bomer would star in a gay version of The Golden Girls, titled Mid-Century Modern, for Hulu, fans buzzed with excitement. While the new series isn’t an exact replica, its premise offers refreshing variations. According to the synopsis:

“The series follows three best friends — gay gentlemen of a certain age — who, after an unexpected death, decide to spend their golden years living together in Palm Springs where the wealthiest one lives with his mother. As a chosen family, they prove that no matter how hard things get, there’s always someone around to remind you it would be better if you got your neck done.”

In The Golden Girls, the story revolves around widow Blanche Devereaux, who owns a home in Miami. After her husband’s death, Rose Nylund moves in from Minnesota and rents a room in Blanche’s house. Dorothy Zbornak, who is divorced, also rents a room, bringing her widowed mother, Sophia Petrillo, from a retirement home. While the setups differ, the theme of chosen family remains a common thread.

Speaking about Mid-Century Modern, Matt Bomer shared with People:

“Some of the circumstances are similar with this group of people, who have decided for a certain chapter in their life, they’re going to live together. There are some nods to not only Golden Girls, but some other characters from past shows which I grew up loving. So it’s sort of a hybrid, but I would definitely say it’s a spiritual cousin.”

Matt Bomer’s character, Jerry Frank, brings a unique flair to the show. Jerry, who was formerly in the Mormon Church, left both the church and his wife after she revealed that he was gay. According to Bomer, his character combines elements of Betty White’s Rose Nylund from The Golden Girls, Woody Harrelson’s Woody Boyd from Cheers, and Edith Bunker from All in the Family. The involvement of Ryan Murphy from American Horror Story and Max Mutchnik from Will & Grace ensures a talented ensemble, with Linda Lavin also joining the cast.
