Matthew McConaughey appeared to be more of a victim of a bee sting than a Reign of Fire in a recent snapshot he shared with fans. The picture initially sparked concern among his followers but eventually revealed a more light-hearted side.

The image, posted on Instagram on Wednesday, showcased a close-up of McConaughey with his right eye bruised and swollen shut. Despite his visibly injured state, the actor sported a smile and light-heartedly captioned the photo, “bee swell.”

Although the exact location of the incident remains unknown, McConaughey resides in Texas with his wife, Camila Alves, and their three children: Levi, Vida, and Livingston. The family moved from Malibu, California, to Texas in 2014, a transition that McConaughey described as feeling instinctively right after spending several weeks in Austin during a family crisis.

“Time slowed down,” McConaughey, 54, told Southern Living. “The clock was right, the body clock. And part of that is ritual; part of that is just the distance between places and the way people move. But it’s also the hospitality, the courtesy, the common sense, the lack of drama.”

In a June conversation with fellow Texan Glen Powell for Interview magazine, McConaughey revealed that he took a two-year hiatus from Hollywood. During this break, he struggled to land roles outside of the romantic comedy genre, where he’d made his mark with titles like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

“Dude, it was scary. I had long talks with my wife about needing to find a new vocation,” McConaughey shared. He even contemplated pursuing entirely different careers, considering teaching high school, studying to conduct music, or working as a wildlife guide.

Today, the Interstellar actor finds himself in a place of comfort and contentment, despite occasional setbacks like a bee sting. In 2020, during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, McConaughey posted a video aimed at encouraging Texans amidst lockdowns. His motivation to uplift others during challenging times reflects his personal philosophy.

“Longhorn Nation, what’s happening? McConaughey here. How we doing out there gang? Yeah, man, crazy times, huh? We’re all in ’em. Let’s remember that. Let’s also remember that this too shall pass, we’re going to be getting through this. Keep that in your minds when you start getting frustrated with how your lifestyle has changed. We are going to get through this, if we help ourselves and we help each other.”
