McKayla Skinner Seeks Help from Simone Biles as Instagram Caption Goes Viral

Simone Biles claimed an impressive three gold medals and one silver at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France. With this spectacular performance, Biles has solidified her place as one of the greatest gymnasts in history. At 27, Biles may be nearing the end of her Olympic career, as she’ll be 31 by the next Olympic Games.

Biles’s battle with mental health and her recovery from the twisties is well-documented. Prior to the Paris Games, McKayla Skinner, a fellow Olympic medalist and former Team USA gymnast, expressed concerns about the current team’s depth outside of Biles, suggesting that the talent wasn’t as strong as it used to be.

“Besides Simone, I feel like the talent and depth just isn’t what it used to be,” Skinner noted.

Despite Skinner’s observations, Biles, along with teammates Suni Lee, Jade Carey, Jordan Chiles, and Hezly Rivera, led their team to a gold medal victory. Biles responded to Skinner’s comments by posting on Instagram, using Skinner’s words as a motivational quote.

“Lack of talent, lazy, Olympic champions,” Biles wrote on social media.

While Skinner attempted to clarify her comments in July, they had already spread among fans and gymnasts alike.

“I feel like a lot of you guys had misinterpreted or misunderstood exactly what I was meaning or had said,” Skinner explained. “A lot of the stuff that I was talking about wasn’t always necessarily about the current team, because I love and support all the girls that made it and I’m so proud of them.”

Skinner accepted full responsibility for the misunderstanding and noted that she had been subjected to cyberbullying as a result. She urged Biles and other gymnasts to help stop the negative treatment she was facing. Skinner also apologized to each gymnast individually but blocked Biles, which added to the tension.

It’s important to mention that Biles has not encouraged any bullying against Skinner. Fans of Team USA Gymnastics shouldn’t feel the need to defend their athletes aggressively. Skinner has already made efforts to apologize individually.

This incident is a reminder of the pressures faced by professional athletes and commentators. Ideally, this situation will eventually settle down. Biles and her team proved Skinner wrong with their performance, but Skinner doesn’t deserve the harsh treatment on social media.
