Meet Michael Keaton’s Handsome Son Sean Douglas and Their Family’s Tragedy

To some, Michael Keaton might be known as Beetlejuice, Batman, or Birdman, but to Sean Douglas, he’s simply dad.

The actor, who recently reprised his role as Beetlejuice for the highly-anticipated sequel, is a proud father to Sean, 41. Michael welcomed Sean with his ex-wife Caroline McWilliams, whom he was married to from 1982 to 1990.

Sean has chosen a different career path than his father, but he remains in the entertainment industry. Unlike Michael, who changed his last name from Douglas to Keaton to avoid confusion with fellow actor Michael Douglas, Sean retained the Douglas surname. Despite choosing different professional routes, the father-son duo shares a strong bond.

When Michael won a Golden Globe in 2015 for his performance in “Birdman,” he had touching words for his son: “My best friend is kind, intelligent, funny, talented, considerate, thoughtful. Did I say kind? He also happens to be my son, Sean. I love you with all my heart, buddy.”

Born on May 27, 1983, Sean is Michael and Caroline’s only child. Although Michael keeps his personal life private, it’s known that Sean’s mother, Caroline, passed away in February 2010 at the age of 64 after battling multiple myeloma. Michael has not remarried but has been in a relationship with Marni Turner since 2014. He also dated “Friends” actress Courteney Cox for five years after his divorce from Caroline.

Unlike his actor parents, Sean found his calling in the music industry. Based in Los Angeles, Sean works as a songwriter and record producer. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a degree in anthropology before diving into music. Sean initially pursued his own band but eventually shifted focus to writing for other artists across various genres. His notable achievements include winning a Grammy for Lizzo’s “Cuz I Love You” and earning a nomination for co-writing Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man.” He also co-wrote Demi Lovato’s 2013 hit “Heart Attack.”

In 2014, Sean married his college sweetheart Rachel Bartov, who later became his manager and is a partner at Range Media. The couple has two children: River, born in 2017, and Maggie, born in 2020.
