The late Toby Keith left a significant legacy in country music upon his passing in February 2024. This legacy was celebrated by his family and peers during the event Toby Keith: American Icon. Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, and many others participated in the tribute, which was streamed on Peacock and NBC.
His wife and children attended the event, highlighting his personal side as a father of three.
Known for his love of children, Toby Keith was deeply involved in supporting children’s cancer charities. In 2004, he founded Ally’s House, named after the late daughter of one of his former bandmates. He also established the Toby Keith Foundation, which built housing for pediatric cancer patients and their families.
When Toby married Tricia Lucus, he adopted her daughter Shelley. The couple then had two more children, Krystal and Stelen. Krystal followed her father into the country music scene, while Stelen pursued a career in business.
Toby once shared, “I absolutely love performing and writing songs, but being at home with my wife, Tricia, and my three kids is the best feeling of all.”
Here’s everything you need to know about his family.
Toby met his wife of over 40 years in a local bar where he was working as an oil field worker. At the time, he was also singing in local bars with his band, the Easy Money Band. Tricia was working as an oil company secretary.
The couple married in 1984 after three years of dating, and Toby adopted Tricia’s daughter Shelley.
In 1982, Oklahoma’s oil industry declined, leading Toby to focus on his music career. The family relied on regional gigs to make ends meet, juggling creditors while raising their children.
Reflecting on his wife’s support, Toby said, “It took a strong-hearted and loving woman to say, ‘He’s good enough at music that I’ve got to let him try. And it’ll be a great shot for both of us if he can make it work.'”
Born in 1980, Shelley was adopted by Toby after he married Tricia. Shelley stays out of the spotlight but is reportedly married and has a child.
Krystal, born on September 30, 1985, followed in her father’s musical footsteps. She gained attention when she featured on Toby’s 2004 cover of “Mockingbird,” which they performed together at the 38th Annual CMA Awards.
Toby supported her throughout her journey in the industry, often protecting her from media scrutiny. “I can save her some of the heartache, and protect her a little bit from media,” he explained in 2012.
In 2013, Krystal released her first album, “Whiskey & Lace,” which included the song “Daddy Dance with Me.” She wrote it for her father-daughter dance at her wedding, describing the process as an amazing experience.
Krystal is married to Andrew Sandubrae, and they have two daughters, Kirby and Hensley.
Their youngest child and only son, Stelen, was born on April 17, 1997. He is a Commercial and Residential Real Estate Investor and owns several businesses, including 405 Burger Bar, Hollywood Corners, and Tequila Chulos.
Stelen graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2019 with a Bachelor’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Venture Management. He married Haley Covel in 2021.
